There is alot of deserved & non-deserved hype out there in the media world about the Internet. Part of that hype is the mind-boggling statistics that are thrown at people about the web & the internet. We thought it would be a good idea to reference these statistics in one place. Here are some that we have come across.
- From Toronto Star (Sat. Sept 20, 1997)
Some 50 million people are estimated to be hooked to the Net today with predictions of at least 20 million by year 2000.
- From Globe & Mail July 19-97
NASA reports that 45 million hits are recorded on the Jet Propulsion Lab web sites between July 4-11, to view the latest news from The Mars Pathfinder, becoming the media of choice for this event.
- From Toronto Star (Mar 3-97) (Reuter)
- 200 million computers will be connected by the year 2000 says Vinton Cerf Senior VP at MCI.
- About 16 million computers were connected as of Jan 97.
- Number of internet users for 1996 was 35 million.
- That leaves 2.2 users per connected computer.
- From Canadian Business: Technology Nov 30, 96.
- The US is the most 'wired' country with 16.4 million adult users. Poll taken by The Project 2000, Nashville, TN. Poll was taken fall 1996.
- 75% of all internet users and 64% of all host computers reside in the US
- Males outnumber females 2:1 (roughly 70% male 30% female)
- Median age is 32 yrs. One quarter of frequent users are between the ages of 35-44
- 27% of users earned between $50,000 (US) and $75,000. Another 24% at $35,000 to $50,000.
- More than 90% of current Internet users have received a college education.
- 42% of users are professional/managerial types. The next largest group are those on their way to these positions-students, 23%.
- From Toronto Star (Sept 26-96)
- December 1995, AC Neilson survey showed that 6.5 million Canadians are on the net from home, school or work.
- Jupiter Communications of New York stated that sales via the internet have reached $400 million (Canadian $). Sales are predicted to reach more than $600 million by the year 2000 and 1.4 trillion by 2010.
